Jean-Marc Desmet studied medicine at the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL). He began his career as a general practitioner from 1998 to 2000. During this period, he trained as an emergency physician at the University of Liège (ULG). He then joined the emergency department at Charleroi University Hospital, where he met Dr Alain Juvenois. Dr. Juvenois encouraged him to pursue training in general internal medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). He completed the last 3 years of his training at Hôpital Erasme. He graduated in nephrology in 2007. Jean-Marc Desmet returned to work in Charleroi until 2023. He currently works as a nephrologist for the Helora 5 group in Jolimont, Nivelles and Lobbes. He has also been President of the Groupement des Néphrologues Francophones de Belgique (GNFB) for almost five years.
